Choosing Cable Glands for Industrial Enclosures

Cable-gland selection is easier when four basic conditions are confirmed before the product size is chosen.

Cable gland installed on an electrical enclosure

1. Match the cable outer diameter

The gland must clamp and seal within the specified cable range. Nominal cable size alone is not enough; confirm the actual outer diameter.

2. Confirm the enclosure thread

Metric, PG and NPT threads are not interchangeable. Identify both the thread system and exact size before ordering.

3. Select the material for the environment

Stainless steel 304 suits many industrial and outdoor applications. Stainless steel 316 is preferred for marine or more corrosive conditions. Nickel-plated brass provides a practical option for general electrical equipment.

4. Check the required protection level

The final sealing performance depends on the gland model, sealing components, cable fit and installation. Confirm the required rating for the complete assembly rather than relying on material alone.
